Futures Paradigm Map

2024

I developed "The Futures Paradigm Map" as a tool to assist individuals and teams in future planning, drawing on transdisciplinary principles and methods such as creative horizon scanning, back-casting, and scenario building. My design for implementing a futures thinking process is accessible to those outside the transdisciplinary space and can be applied across various contexts and challenges. This map guides users through the creative process of envisioning different possibilities, integrating research and evidence to address complex situations and shape current circumstances into desired future outcomes.

Initiating their journey with 'The Futures Paradigm Map,' users will commence by charting the crucial components of their current state within the bottom circle labelled, 'Current State.' The decision to omit bold instructions during the mapping of the current state stems from the recognition of the diverse issues that may benefit from the flexibility offered by this process.

Illustrated in likeness to an iris, the central portion of 'The Futures Paradigm Map' adheres to a cyclical framework, originating from the middle and extending outward to the crucial steps guided by an overarching clockwise arrow. This design implies that the map is designed for ongoing utility throughout the futures thinking process, emphasising that a solution does not have to arrive to a conclusive destination after its initial use.
